Hooshum, Soapberry | Sepherdia canadesis
Soapberry (Hooshum)

All Interior Native groups whip up the berries or syrup with a little water into a light froth, called Indian ice cream. The berries are rich in iron and were either eaten fresh, dried for later use or boiled into syrup for use as a beverage. Native people used the berries, juice, twigs or leaves medicinally for everything from heart attacks to indigestion.
