Southern Interior Native peoples used edible horsehair as a staple and
an emergency food. They washed it thoroughly, pit-cooked it with wild
onions, roots and bulbs, and dried it in cakes for storage. They boiled
the cakes with berries, roots or meat before eating them. This and other
hair lichens also provide an important winter food for deer, elk, moose
and especially flying squirrels and caribou. |
